On cadence

The case for seasons, not sessions

Change rarely arrives in a single call. It holds when it is worked at across a season, with a steady rhythm and an honest review at the close of each quarter.

There is a version of coaching sold by the hour — a single, intensive session, a burst of clarity, and a promise that something will shift. It rarely does, and the reason is not the quality of the hour.

The hard part of change was never the insight. It is the follow-through, and follow-through cannot be delivered in one sitting.

Change does not arrive in a single call. It holds when it is worked at.

Why the one-off fails

A single session flatters everyone. The leader leaves energised, the coach looks effective, and the calendar is clear again. Nothing about the actual work has been tested.

Real change shows up between sessions, in the ordinary decisions where old habits are strongest. A one-off is never there for that part.

So the clarity fades, the pattern returns, and the session becomes a pleasant memory rather than a turning point.

Why seasons work

The work runs in seasons instead: a steady cadence of conversations across several months, with access in between and an honest review at the close of each quarter.

The cadence matters more than any single meeting. It keeps the work present in the decisions that actually shape a year, not just in the room.

And the review makes progress visible — what has changed, what has not, and what to work on next. Without it, momentum is a feeling; with it, it is a fact.

The pace is the point

A season is long enough for a new behaviour to hold and short enough to stay honest. It is deliberate on both counts.

The pace is steady on purpose. Change holds when it is worked at, not when it is rushed, and rushing is how most good intentions quietly fail.

That is why engagements run in seasons, renewed by choice and never locked in. The work earns its place each quarter, or it does not continue.
